The fort is named for '''stibnite''', a lead-grey mineral (antimony trisulfide, Sb₂S₃) used historically in metallurgy and cosmetics. The Archean Empire's practice of naming installations after minerals is consistent with other known sites in their territory.

Fort Stibnite sits at the far western edge of Archean Empire-claimed land. Boundary markers labelled "ARC EMP" have been documented in Region r.-2.0 from approximately x:−512 to x:−1008, running along z:0 to z:171. Fort Stibnite, at x:−692, sits near the centre of this western extent.

Beyond x:−1008, no ARC EMP markers have been found, suggesting the fort marked the de facto western frontier of the empire.
