A multi-sign narrative at the Nether Hub entrance recounts the city's origin:

The lone miner was then banished to a barren wasteland that he could never leave. The miner, trapped above the nether, began to build a small town of which he lived in for many months til he grew mad. He then beseeched the wizard of eternal flames to help him escape from his prison. The wizard heard his cries and cast a potion to break through the unbreakable ground. The miner, amazed by the incredible light, refused to leave and would not give up his town he had built in.
